Itinerary
- Welcome, introduction and safety briefing
- Forge the axe head: Drift and shape the eye of the axe head
- Use processes such as cross peening and fullering to forge the cheeks
- Shape the face of the axe then forge wield the high carbon edge
- Head out to the grinding bay to use tools to shape and grind a bevel into the axe head
- Use a number of woodworking tools to shape the handle and fit your axe
- Learn how to throw axes at the targets
What Can I Expect
Axe forging in Hereford - with the extra twist of an axe throwing session after, using your hand-forged axe! These full day experiences for two are full of Viking fun. Time to get forging and throwing.
The two of you will spend around five hours at the lovely Oldfield Forge in Hereford learning from the expert smith how to forge your very own axes. It's all about the shape, weight and balance when it comes to making the perfect axe for throwing.
The forge will be fired up and ready for you. You start by hand-crafting the eye of the axe head, then shaping the cheeks and working on the face and the blade. It's quite a skilled and labour-intensive process, but your tutor will be there to teach and assist.
Of course, every axe to be thrown needs a decent handle, so you will be using the wood tools in the workshop to fashion a wooden handle to fit your axe head like a glove.
Now you're ready to throw it! You will be invited to literally test your metal (and mettle) by throwing the axe you've just made into custom-built targets. The Oldfield forge team have built them on site, as everyone loves a spot of traditional nordic sports and activities don't they!
Nothing can beat the satisfaction of the ‘thud' as the axe lodges itself into the wood - and that's made even more satisfying when you know it's the axe you hand-forged at Hereford's lovely Oldfield Forge!
