What Can I Expect
Axe and hammer making classes in Edinburgh! Join Sandy at his metalworking workshop on the outskirts of the Scottish capital to learn to forge your very own tool.
We are offering vouchers that are valid for either the axe making session or the hammer making class. Both the axe and hammer making classes are suitable for beginners, although they are more advanced than the Beginner's Blacksmithing Course and so attending this class first may be preffered.
All courses are taught on a small scale, to ensure each student has their own workspace with an anvil, hammers, tongs, drifts etc to use. It’s worth noting that many of these tools were fabricated by Sandy!
On an axe or hammer making course, you will learn how to forge and heat treat a piece of steel into a usable tool to take home and use. You will learn and utilise skills such as punching, drifting, fullering, grinding, as well as learning the art of smith and striker with the sledge hammer.
All the PPE gear, tools and materials you need are included in the cost of the day. Tuition from Sandy and his team is excellent and you’ll appreciate his depth of knowledge and teaching skills - and you may even hear about his fascinating journey to becoming a blacksmith.
As well as these axe and hammer making courses in Edinburgh, Sandy also hosts half-day blacksmith taster courses from his modern workshop, so there’s bound to be a class to suit you.
