What Can I Expect
These days not many of us regularly use axes for things like chopping firewood (we just turn the thermostat up a bit!), so handling an axe is quite a thing. They are naturally hefty tools, so on this axe throwing session, the Warwickshire team of instructors will start you off with lighter training axes.
These all-metal, hand-held trainer axes have multiple edges to them, so in theory they are easier to get to stick in the wood. Having said that, there's still quite a knack to throwing these light axes, so your instructor will show you how to stand, how to pick and hold the axe and then how to draw your arm up and release the axe.
At the start of these axe throwing sessions in Warwick you'll be at about 3 metres from the targets. That allows you to hone your lobbing skills without being too far away. Once you've got the hang of it, it'll be time to set it up a notch…
You'll be moving on to throwing Tomahawks. These are larger axes with a wooden handle and a single cutting edge. They are much weightier than the training axes, so it's a real challenge. Once again, your instructor will be on hand to give you hints and tips on how to throw the Tomahawks.
As well as teaching you, your trainers will set up a little axe throwing competition for you. You'll have a limited number of axes and you'll mark points according to where you axe lands. A winner will be declared and everyone goes home happy having learnt how to successfully chuck two sorts of axes into great big hulking chunks of wood!
