What Can I Expect
Drive Dad's car, Mum's car or your first car when you hark back to the carefree days of British motoring on this fabulous retro auto experience! This is your chance to drive a selection of British modern classics that are part of a very special car collection in Derbyshire.
Hillman Avenger, Ford Sierra and MkIII Escort. They're the cars our Dad drove when we were little. Our Mum had an Austin Mini with a clothes peg to keep the choke out. No doubt you have similar memories. These experiences put you right back in those childhood days, but this time it's you driving.
As the British car industry went boom and bust, the cars our parents drove changed with the times, but you can't help looking back with affection at the vehicles from decades gone by. The Austin Allegro (or 'All Aggro' as it was known in our household), the Vauxhall Chevette (yep, you guessed it, the 'Shove-it') and the Mini Metro may not have set the world alight in terms of design or refinements, but they are iconic.
Inside the cars it's pretty basic. No air conditioning, wind-down or sliding windows only, fixed seat belts and radio cassette players for only the swankiest of models. And don't get us started on those vinyl seats when stuck in holiday traffic during a heatwave. All those driver aids we take for granted today were non-existent. No power steering, no ABS, no air bags and certainly no touch screens or in-car connectivity, you had to play i-spy or even talk to Mum and Dad instead!
If you want to drive the car Mum or Dad would've liked to have had, go for a two or three-car Choice voucher, as they let you choose cars from across the range from Classic, Premium right up to and including Luxury.
These experiences are part of what we'd call a 'living collection'. Over 100 cars are on show in the Great British Car Journey exhibition. A number of them have been selected to be driven on the purpose-built outdoor street layout on the roads around the exhibition hall, which is in a former factory.
Each Drive Dad's Car voucher includes entrance for the driver plus one guest to the car collection on site, making it a great full day out for retro British car fans of all ages.
