What Can I Expect
Giddy up and get yourself on a cart and horse driving experience in Yorkshire! Learn how to drive a two-wheel cart on the rideways of this private estate near Selby for a fun and fascinating activity.
These cart and horse drives take place at Escrick Park Estate, located between York and Selby. It's a superb place, with miles of rideways making it a paradise for horses, riders and drivers.
The carriage company mainly does horse and carriage rides for events, weddings and experiences, but so many passengers asked to have a go at the reins, that they created this cart and horse driving experience, which you take with or without a delicious Ploughman's lunch.
The first thing to do is meet your host, the horse and the cart too. The horses (and humans for that matter!) are calm, friendly and always ready for a ride out. The cart you will be driving is a traditional two-wheeler.
Back in the 1800s, two wheel carriages, carts and buggies were whizzing around all over the country, transporting people and goods, all pulled by trusty working horses. Nowadays it's more for racing or leisure purposes - and they are great fun to drive.
Of course, driving a two wheel cart is very much about horse and driver working together to literally get the cart rolling. You'll learn a few of the basic phrases the horse will respond to, how to hold and use the reins and how to sit in the cart (there is a knack to being properly balanced in these things!).
No previous horse or cart driving experience is needed for this Yorkshire experience, just wear gear appropriate for being in the countryside and bring your enthusiasm and you'll have a great time at the wonderful Escrick private estate!
