What Can I Expect

The Ecclesbourne Railway ‘Winter Warmer’ package will warm the cockles of your heart! These vouchers include return travel by vintage bus to Wirksworth station and a ride on steam train at Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, with a hearty stew served onboard.

The autumnal colours make this a wonderful time of year to travel by vintage bus from through the ever-changing Derbyshire countryside to Wirksworth. The buses are superb, dating back to the 30s, 40s and 50s and lovingly cared for by the coach operator who runs these trips.

On arrival at Wirksworth, you’ll step aboard the steam train for your round trip to Duffield and back. During your journey you’ll pass through Idridgehay and Shottle stations along this nine-mile heritage railway line.

Staying nice and cosy inside your dining carriage, you’ll be tucking into a delicious beef stew, served in a large Yorkshire pudding, as you gaze out at the autumn vistas. Simple, homely and beautiful.

If you have time, make sure you visit the museum at Wirksworth, which tells the story of the railway and how, when passenger traffic ended in 1947 and goods traffic finally ceased in 1989, the line became a heritage railway. It’s also fascinating that Ecclesbourne Railway shares Duffield Station with regular Midland Mainline services!

The final part of your Ecclesbourne Railway ‘Winter Warmer’ excursion is the ride back in the vintage bus to your choice of drop off point amongst several around the North Nottinghamshire area. Grab a coat, wrap up warm and enjoy these autumn/winter day trips that combine vintage buses with steam trains!
