What Can I Expect
Fascinating falconry days in Northumberland! These experiences all take place at this lovely family-run, professional falconry centre within the wilds of Northumberland's National Park near the village of Wark, between Carlisle and Newcastle. We are offering vouchers for half and full-day falconry sessions, as well as owl encounters.
At the end of a long, winding road beyond Wark, you'll find this tranquil farm in the heart of the countryside. This multi award-winning centre is home to lots of birds of prey, including strays, injured birds, orphans and raptors born and nurtured through the centre's breeding programme.
The falconers you'll meet on these experiences are super passionate about what they do - it's definitely a lifestyle and not just a job! The amazing relationship between handler and bird is clear to see and it is a real treat to be able to witness that at first and on these visits.
If you opt for the owl experience, you will spend a fascinating couple of hours learning all about and handling owls from all different corners of the globe.
On the falconry days you will learn the basic skills of a falconer : how to pick up the birds, weigh them and handle them. You'll discover the names and purposes of various pieces of falconry equipment such as jesses, gauntlets, lures and anklets.
The experienced Northumberland team will show you how falconer's deftly tie the all-important quick-release hitch knot that securely fastens the bird to your wrist or post in preparation for you to take the birds flying. Now you'll experience the full power and might of these wonderful raptors, as they soar magnificently through the dramatic Northumberland skies before returning to your hand.
All half and full falconry days in Northumberland end with a hawk walk, where you can take one of the centre's hawks for a relaxed meander in the woods and fields nearby, letting them fly free through the trees.
