What Can I Expect

It's hammertime! (sorry, we couldn't resist!) Go hammer forging at Oldfield Forge in Hereford and learn how to make your very own hammer that you can pop in your tool box and use.

We love these hammer making experiences. Over the course of a day, you will amaze yourself at how you start with what is effectively a lump of steel and end up with a hammer you can proudly use at home for all those DIY jobs!

Your blacksmith hosts are highly skilled and super friendly. They are really good at tutoring you through the whole forging process from start to finish. What's good about these courses is that you can make the hammer to your design and the smithing team will help you with that as well.

The first job is to punch the eye of the hammer (that's the bit where the handle goes). And then you move onto shaping the cheek (the sides) of the hammer head. You will then continue to forge the rest of the hammer to get that recognisable hammer form.

You will be shown traditional forging techniques and whilst they are quite physically demanding, it is infinitely satisfying to see your hammer taking shape as you work.

Shaping done, it's time to temper (heat treat) the hammer to regain the steel's toughness. The final part of the process is adding a handle, before giving your completed hammer a nice grind and polish finish, ready for those ‘look what I made' photos with you proudly holding your hammer aloft!

Offering a nice twist on a traditional blacksmithing day, we think these hammer forging experiences at Hereford's Oldfield are superb. And what's more, the price is for two of you to make a hammer together, so the vouchers are really good value for money too.
