What Can I Expect

HGV driver training in West Sussex - whether you’re interested in getting your LGV licence, curious about a change of career, or just love lorries, this is the experience day for you!

Hosted by a long-established, family-run, professional driver training school based in Lancing, West Sussex, you’ll spend around four hours with the company, riding in, learning about and driving an HGV.

Your day starts at the training company’s HQ. You’ll meet your personal instructor for the duration of the course who’ll explain what you’ll be doing and what you’ll learn. Then it’s time to meet the 44-tonne Volvo track unit, which will be hooked up to a 45ft trailer…

And yep, standing right next to the HGV, you realise just how enormous they are. Climbing into the cab for the first time, you’ll appreciate that high-up viewpoint truckers have and you’ll feel like a king or queen of the road!

Setting off from Lancing with the instructor at the wheel, you’ll head to Ford Airfield near Arundel. This journey is a great opportunity to get a feel of being in a truck on the open roads and to ask all those HGV-related questions you have.

Once on private land at the airfield, it’s your turn at the wheel. If you smash those basic moves of moving off, steering and stopping smoothly, you’ll soon progress to more tricky training manoeuvres such as reversing into loading bays, tackling a coned slalom and so on.

You’ll even be shown how driver’s hook and unhook the trailers to their tractor units. There’s quite a knack to it and you’ll be taught all the techniques you need to succeed.

It’s worth noting that, if you are serious about becoming a truck driver, you can apply for a provisional licence (a medical will be required) and take your training a step further on this HGV driver day by heading out on the open roads, which feels great!
