What Can I Expect
Make the cut on these knife making classes in the Yorkshire Dales! We are offering one and two-day experiences to learn how to make a knife that you will be able to use in your kitchen, garden or just keep as a memento of your time at the forge.
Skilled blacksmith and bladesmith Richard is your teacher and host for these classes. Group sizes are kept small, so you will have plenty of access to the tools and your host's expertise to assist you in your mission to make a knife.
The classes focus on making a Damascus knife. That's to say, the knife is made using Damascus steel, which is renowned for being hard and flexible, with the characteristic of staying sharp, making it the ideal material for a usable knife.
Make no mistake, these classes are not just about doing the final touches to finish a knife. It is you who will be forging the blade and handle from a single billet of Damascus steel. Using age-old traditional hardening and tempering techniques, you'll then grind, polish and edge the blade, with a final etching in acid to give it that stunning pattern Damascus steel is known for.
If you book onto the two day course, the work continues on the second day to refine and finish your knife. You get to choose the wood you would like to make, shape and fit your handle, as well as adding a nice brass bolster to the blade too.
Whether you join Richard in his forge for one or two days of knife making, these classes in the very picturesque Yorkshire Dales village of Grassington are truly superb. Great teaching in a great place, so why not make a weekend of it?
