What Can I Expect

Go madferit - it's the Manchester music walking tour! Spend a couple of hours in Warehouse City exploring the roots of the music and culture of Manchester through the decades. From Madchester to Acid House, you'll hear about it all.

Meeting at the Bridgewater Hall for this musical-themed walking tour sets the scene for what's to come. There's no doubting Manchester has played a huge part in the British music scene for many, many years (and nice to know it's not always about that London!).

It all started in the 60s with the likes of Freddie & The Dreamers and the Hollies at the Time & Place. Then, like a whirlwind, came punk and post-punk. And before you know it, Madchester was born. Cue the likes of the Stone Roses, Northside, The Charlatans, Verve and Sonic Youth - music that really spoke to a whole generation.

The venues in Manchester were intrinsically linked with the local music scene. The International 2 where the Stone Roses first played live was partly owned by their manager. Little-known band at the time Oasis played their first gig at the Boardwalk, where many bands also rehearsed.

Then as Madchester went even madder with Acid House and Rave, the iconic Hacienda, run by Manchester-based label Factory Records, literally took off. If you were in Manchester in the late 80s/early 90s and you didn't go to the Haci, you haven't lived!

This guided tour will walk you around Manchester, giving you all the insider info on the music bizz. See the venues (some now gone, but never forgotten!) and hear about the bands and the people (from dancing legend Bez and the Gallagher brothers, to Terry Christian and Tony Wilson). It'll give you a real insight into the Manchester music scene.
