What Can I Expect
Head into the (virtual) skies in a Messerschmitt simulator! Newcastle is the base for this German Bf109 simulator and we are offering 30 and 60-minute experiences in this famous World War 2 fighter plane.
The Luftwaffe was created in 1935 and headed by flying ace Hermann Goring. Following defeat in the First World War, the Germans were restricted from creating an air force. Ironically, this meant that the newly formed Luftwaffe benefited from having a brand new fighter plane designed for them; the Bf109, known by the Allied forces as the Me109.
Much advanced from the open-cockpit biplanes the British Air Force still flew, Willy Messerschmitt's superb 109 was a single seater, monoplane fighter plane. It was a force to be reckoned with, having flexed its muscles in the Spanish Civil War.
Whilst the Royal Air Force soon caught up with RJ Mitchell's Spitfire, the Messerschmitt still had, on paper at least, the advantage over the Spitfire. The injected fuel system ensured a constant supply in inverted flight and the German fighter was armed with cannons.
There's no denying the Messerschmitt was a formidable force in the air. The fighter chalked up more aerial kills than any other aircraft in WW2. With nearly 40,000 of them produced during its long life span between 1935 and 1955, the Messerschmitt was the backbone of not only Hitler's Luftwaffe, but also used by the likes of the Swiss, Finnish and former Yugoslavian Air Forces too.
The simulator you'll be flying in is an accurate full-size replica of a later k series 109 cockpit. When it was introduced in 1944, this version boasted the best rate of climb of any fighter plane anywhere. All Messerschmitt simulator experiences in Newcastle are hosted by expert pilots (many of whom have many years of RAF and fast jet experience). They'll be only too delighted to tell you all about the ‘skinny one' (as the Russians called the 109), so buy your voucher and get ready to see if you can handle the mighty Messer!
