What Can I Expect
Go paddleboarding in Newquay in a very special place! Ideal for beginners or those with some paddleboard experience, these tours are a great way to hone your stand up paddling technique in a picture-perfect place.
That special setting is the Gannel Estuary. It's the hidden gem of the Newquay area. The River Gannel, which separates Crantock village from Newquay, flows into the sea at Crantock. It's a tidal estuary, so you need to know when to go (otherwise you'll be walking!) but it is remarkably sheltered, making it a blissful spot for paddleboarding.
What really sets apart this corner of Newquay for paddleboarding is the environment. It's a river, but it's like paddling on a calm ocean, as the waters are a clear blue. And when the tide goes out, it's a picturesque blend of the golden sands and the blue green hues of the water and land. Just stunning.
And we have to mention the wildlife. It's a veritable hub of life on the Gannel. There are plenty of wading birds who love the sand banks and fish like salmon and trout are often spotted in those crystal-clear waters.
As you paddle, keep a lookout for Penpole Creek, which was once the Port of Truro. This former quay was where merchandise was loaded and off-loaded. It's a fascinating little insight into Cornish history!
All along your SUP tour you'll paddle along at a gentle pace, giving you time to enjoy and appreciate your surroundings. Don't worry if you have never paddleboarded before, the meandering route is suitable for beginners and you'll have coaches with you.
Most paddlers start on their knees and many progress to standing up on the board. Either way is good, so whatever you feel comfortable with goes. We think paddleboarding along Newquay's Gannel estuary is a wonderful way to get into the sport of stand up paddleboarding. Buy your vouchers now!
