What Can I Expect
Throw some pots on a pottery class near Wolverhampton! These experiences are for two to enjoy the craft of working the clay together on a two-hour tutored pottery session. Your host is Sandra, a very creative and skilled pottery teacher.
Sandra's pottery studio is at Halfpenny Green vineyard. This English winery is the beating heart of this calm corner of the country, between Wolverhampton and Stourbridge. Home to a farm shop, craft village, restaurant and wild zoo, there is a lot to do and see.
Working as a pair, you'll be shown how to prepare the clay. There's quite a skill to this, but this initial part of the process is very satisfying. And it is your first time to get your hands dirty as you work that clay.
After the prepping, you should have around six balls of worked clay to use. The next stage is the potter's wheel. Sandra will show you the controls (there's a foot pedal to use) and how to throw your lump of clay onto the wheel. The key is to get it central. Get that right and you're well on your way!
Under the watchful eye of Sandra, you will work as a duo to create your pots. First you open up the clay, to create a cavity in the middle. Then a steady hand and a delicate movement is needed to ‘pull up' the sides of your clay piece. And before you know it, your pot will be starting to take shape.
Utterly mesmerising and surprisingly satisfying, when you take your pride and joy off the wheel using the cutting wire, you're sure to have a little moment. Your very first hand-thrown clay piece has been produced!
You'll normally have time to create between three and six pieces on these pottery classes. All pieces you have thrown will be dried, glazed and fired and then sent out to you by post. Don't forget, the pottery studio is in a wonderful vineyard and craft village location, so you can easily spend the best part of a day there.
