What Can I Expect
Bringing Shakespeare’s London to life on these tours! Join a two-hour walking tour with your actor host who will guide you through Medieval London.
Although born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564, the famous Bard spent much of life in London, in particular the City area north of the River Thames, now known as the Square Mile. Back in Shakespere’s time, London was a very different place.
With your guide leading the way, you’ll explore Tudor nooks and crannies of the City. There are hidden gems galore, from forgotten statues, to historically significant buildings (including plaques to commemorate landmarks lost in the 1666 Great Fire of London).
Everything you see works to build up a picture of Shakespeare’s life in the capital. You’ll see the plaque that shows the only property the famous playwright ever owned in London and discover the sister theatre to The Globe, that once stood in Blackfriars.
And of course, you’ll hear lots of anecdotes and little-known facts about Shakespeare as you walk. Did you know the wordsmith gave us numerous expressions we still use today? From ‘in a pickle’ and ‘gossip’ in A Midsummer’s Night Dream, to going on a ‘wild goose chase’ in the Merchant of Venice.
Rounding off your Shakespeare London Tour at the Barbican, you’ll have learnt a lot about the world-famous poet and playwright and even heard some of the best speeches every delivered on stage, courtesy of your actor host!
