What Can I Expect
Cast off on a Swinton Estate fishing lesson! Fish in the company of a qualified angling guide for a half or full-day in the heart of the very lovely Swinton Park Estate near Ripon in Yorkshire.
Marina opened her fishing school on the Swinton Estate in 2019. The office and shop, in a lovely stone outbuilding, is right opposite the Terrace restaurant of the renowned Swinton Park Hotel. This is where you'll meet your instructor and get kitted out with all the fishing gear you'll need.
There are many beats to fish within this 20,000(!)-acre estate. The River Burn runs through the northern side of the estate, with the River Ure running down the eastern side. These waters feed the many lakes in the grounds, some of which are for fishing. Your angling expert will decide where's best to fish on the day and will take you there.
On the rivers, you'll be fishing for the likes of wild brown trout, grayling and salmon, depending on the season. There are an impressive four miles of single-bank beat on the Ure and six miles of double-bank beat on the Burn. The Leighton Reservoir lake on the estate is stocked with rainbow trout and there's even a training lake for learning how to cast.
You'll be taught everything you need to know to be able to cast off and (hopefully) land a catch. There is a lot to learn about fishing. From knowing that the use of traditional Yorkshire Spider flies around these parts brings the best results, to understanding the difference between dry and wet fly fishing, it's fascinating!
All done in a friendly and relaxed way, these half and full-day sessions for one or two people are a fantastic way to get into fishing. Absolutely no experience is necessary and all the gear you need is included, even the picnic lunch for the full-day experience.
And if you're booking into Swinton Estate's fishing school, why not make a weekend of it and stay at the very lovely Swinton Park Hotel ?
