What Can I Expect

Book onto this three-day bushcraft tool forging course and learn how to make a trio of essential survival tools. Move over Bear Grylls, we’re making our own bushcraft axe, knife and flint striker!

Survival is all about, well, surviving. In the great outdoors or the big wilderness, you need to be savvy and equipped. That’s where this fantastic bushcraft-themed course at Oldfield Forge comes in. Using traditional blacksmithing techniques, you will forge three bushcraft tools.

Over the three days you will be hard at work at the anvil to make an axe, a knife and a flint striker. The axe is essential for chopping and splitting things like wood so you can make a fire and make a shelter. The knife can also be used for carving wood, tinder and so on, as well as foraging and food preparation.

So you’ve got your fire wood sorted and your food chopped, but you need to light the fire. That’s where the flint striker comes in. Not only decorative, this forged metal piece serves to create those essential fire lighting sparks when you strike it against a piece of sharp-edged flint.

Spending three days at the forge, which is near the Welsh/English is a true delight. The blacksmithing team is dedicated and passionate about what it does and they do these courses really well - making you feel inspired, motivated and capable of making such beautiful, bespoke tools.

Why not ‘make a short break of it’ and combine your bushcraft tool forging course with local visits and activities from walks in the countryside around the forge or along the River Wye, to visiting Skenrith and Grosmont Castles and meandering around the shops and galleries in nearby Ross on Wye?
