What Can I Expect
Recreate a bit of aviation history with these Tiger Moth flights over Kent! Soar over the South East in this classic biplane for a wonderfully vintage aerial adventure in the skies above the Garden of England - it really is like stepping back in aviation time.
Flight durations in the Tiger Moths from Headcorn vary, with 15, 20, 30, 45 and 60 minute lessons in these wonderful war birds. And of course, no matter how long you're up there for, all offer spectacular views of the beautiful Kent countryside, where many a wartime flying ace would have trained in Moths too.
You'll get a short pre-flight briefing, where you'll find out the technical details of how to fly one of these incredible aircraft, before it's out onto the apron to catch your first up-close glimpse of the vintage Moth you are about to take off in from Headcorn.
You could be flying in G-ANMO or G-PWBE Tiger Moths, as both are on the roster here at Headcorn. G-ANMO is the old girl of the fleet, having been built for the RAF in 1934, flying under serial number K4259 until she was demobbed in 1953. After a sojourn to France for a while, she came back to the UK in 1970. After a full restoration in 1987 she has been flying ever since, resplendent in her post-war RAF trainer colour scheme.
Still vintage but a veritable youngster compared to K4259, the very loveable Tiger Moth G-PWBE was built in 1959 and is one of the rare examples that were built post-World War Two by Lawrence Engineering Services in Australia, so you could say this young old bird has travelled far in its lifetime! The astute amongst you will notice that this Moth has been slightly modified with a tail wheel and brakes, so she is not limited to grass runways.
Both planes are dual control (their background is flight training after all), so with you sitting up front right behind the propellor, your instructor in the seat behind will be taking the lead for take-off and landing, but there's the opportunity for you to pilot the biplane for a short period of time if you're feeling confident.
Alternatively, you can simply sit back and enjoy the uninterrupted views of the Kentish landscape unfolding beneath you from as you stare out form that open Tiger Moth cockpit. If your flight path takes you south of Headcorn, you might very well spot landmarks such as Sissinghurst Castle and the Tenterden railway line as you fly.
Our training packages and Tiger Moth flights in Kent are the perfect gift for classic aircraft fans, history buffs and anyone with an interest in good, old-fashioned flying.
