What Can I Expect

Abseiling at Uphill Quarry near Weston-super-Mare - this is the big one ! Actually called 'The Big One' by our abseil adventure team, a head for heights is definitely needed for this experience…

Just south of Weston, on the edge of the Mendip Hills and the estuary of the River Axe, you’ll find Uphill village, with its former quarry. Mined for limestone from 1820 to the 1940s, it used to be a noisy, dusty and busy place. Now Uphill Quarry is home to a sailing club, marina and camp site.

Overlooking the water is the huge cliff face, with the ruins of the 12th century Chapel of St Nicholas atop. It’s quite a setting for your abseiling adventure, starting with the amazing views across the bay at the top of the cliffs.

What goes up must come down, as they say - and in the case of Uphill Quarry, you will abseil the 150ft down to the ground!

It’s clearly a ‘don’t try this at home’ moment, but it is one of those once in a lifetime things to do, be it for your birthday, to raise money for charity, or as a work challenge amongst colleagues.

The experienced instructors will set everything up and you will be kitted out with a harness, helmet and rock shoes. You’ll be taught the abseiling rope techniques so you can abseil the full height of that impressive rock, right down to the bottom.

Even when your feet touch the ground, you heart will probably still be in your mouth, but the day you abseiled The Big One at Uphill Quarry will be a moment to be proud of!
