What Can I Expect
Windsor Castle and tea. You can't get much more quintessentially English than that! These great value packages for two will see you visiting the Royal residence and then enjoying a sparkling cream tea at the nearby Clarence brasserie.
If you were to draw a typical castle, we reckon it'd resemble Windsor pretty much to a tee (or to a tea in this case!). With round turrets, hexagonal towers, flags flying and moats, the Windsor estate dominates the town.
As you approach the main gates, you'll have your tickets in hand, so you can forget the queue and just head on in. Make sure you pick up your audio tour guide, which is included in this Windsor Castle and tea package. You can walk around listening to the commentary at your own pace.
You'll hear how Windsor has been home to 40 monarchs, one of whom had a major influence on the interior design. Charles II wanted to rival the decadence of his cousin Louis XIV's decor at Versailles. So expect to see lots of gold leaf, gilding, fancy ceiling plaster work, opulent furnishings and grandiose artwork too in the amazing State Apartments.
These apartments are still used today by members of the Royal family for events, so you can just imagine the King and his Queen Consort sipping cups of tea in one of Windsor Castle's sumptuous drawing rooms, overlooking the fine gardens.
One of the highlights for many is seeing Queen Mary's Dolls' House. Designed by famous architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, it's one of the largest in the world. You will also see the likes of the Gothic St George's chapel and take a wander around the Precincts. All in all, you'll easily spend a good couple of hours at the castle before heading off for your teatime treat.
The Clarence Brasserie is a pretty, double-bay fronted brasserie and tea rooms and the end of the tiny cobbled street right opposite the gates to Windsor Castle. Family-owned and run, a traditional cream tea here is a true delight, with fluffy homemade scones, sandwiches, tea or coffee. And don't forget, your Windsor Castle tea package includes a flute of Prosecco too.
