What Can I Expect
Chocks away for an historic World War One flying experience in Norfolk! These 45-minute flights will take you on a fascinating voyage through what happened during WW1 on this part of the East Anglian coast.
Taking off from Yarmouth Heliport (you might also know it as North Denes Airfield), you’ll be in a classic de Havilland Tiger Moth for these World War One-themed flights.
During the First World War, this whole area was very important for the Royal Naval Air Service. Using bases around Yarmouth, their role here was to protect the British coastline from German attack.
Nicknamed ‘Zeppelin Alley’ by this Moth crew, you’ll fly the stretch of coast used by enemy airships loaded with bombs. There are a great many local stories about German Zeppelins flying and dropping bombs off course all around this area, when Hull was actually the main target.
Heading in-land, you’ll then soar over Hickling Broads, the largest of the lovely Norfolk Broads and where naval seaplanes landed when the winds were too strong on the sea.
Your World War One-themed Moth flight then takes a southerly direction towards Burgh Castle. Originally part of the Air Home Defence network, this airfield, which was operational until 1919, was used for night landings and as a satellite airfield for anti Zeppelin patrols.
Your run home back to base at Yarmouth Heliport sees you flying right over the Great Yarmouth and Caister-on-Sea for a fantastic bird’s eye view of the coast and beaches.
And as well as touring all these incredible sites steeped in military history, you will also have the chance (if you’re up for it!) to have a go at the controls of the Tiger Moth during your World War One flying experience over Norfolk.
