What Can I Expect

Take part in an ice sculpting workshop and quite literally create the coolest work of art ever! These one-hour workshops for a minimum of two guests, take place at a professional ice-sculptor's studio in Surrey and offer a fascinating hands-on insight into creating stunning sculptures using just good old frozen water!

Percy, Nicky and Giovanni will welcome you into their ice sculpting workshop just outside Lingfield in Surrey. Your introduction to this frozen world starts with a demo from the talented pro-sculptors. They'll chat about the history of ice carving, as they use the tools of the trade (chainsaws and chisels) to chip away at a block of ice. Please note: chainsaws are not provided for the ice carving experience.

Interestingly, both Percy and Giovanni have backgrounds in catering, having cut their cloth creating exotic fruit and vegetable carvings in fancy hotels. Now they love creating all manner of bespoke pieces for major brands, events and shows around the country - even if it does mean spending lots of time in the freezer at a cool -7 degrees!

The ice blocks are produced on the premises using a special water mixture, which not only makes for excellent clarity, but also takes much longer than 'normal' ice to melt. S o how long do the icy creations last? Well, that depends on the size of the piece (the bigger it is, the slower it melts), the air temperature and other factors. But up to six hours is likely with the finer details melting first followed by the bigger bits.

Your ice challenge (once kitted out in gloves, goggles and aprons) is to work your own block of ice to make a solo ice sculpture that you get to take away with you. Previous participants have carved out everything from heart shapes and stiletto designs, to footballs, horses and even torsos!

This ice sculpting class offers a truly unique creative experience that lets you have a go at an art form that is both stunning and great fun to try. It might be a new experience for you, but did you know that the ancient Chinese were the first ice carvers? They put candles inside hollow ice buckets to make lanterns. As for the Russian tsars, they made ice cannons to fire ice cannon balls!
