What Can I Expect

Get creative on a stained glass leading workshop in Birmingham! Join skilled artist Jamal Rafay at his StainedGlassic studio to learn how to make your very own stained glass panel to take home with you.

Jamal is a freelance artist specialising in all things stained glass. He works nationally and internationally on commissions, historical restorations and architectural projects. From his little studio comes amazing pieces of work and these experiences give you an insight into his world.

Stained glass leading is basically the art of cutting fragments of coloured glass, joining and then cementing them together to form a desired pattern or design. When hung in the right place, the light floods through the coloured glass and gives a wonderful ethereal glow to brighten any home.

You will be given a template of approximately six or seven morsels of coloured glass to work from. They could be squares, rectangles or indeed, any random shape. In the workshop you will learn to fit them together in whichever pattern you like.

Jamal will talk you through and show you every step of the process, from the design to the final cementing. You'll find leading stained glass together is quite intricate, but a fascinating and very satisfying thing to do - and you'll get really into it.

By the end of your day at the StainedGlassic studio, you will have hand-crafted a very lovely piece of visual art that is sure to please. And of course, it's yours to take home and put it in pride of place in front of a window to make the most of natural light.
