When it comes to surfing, one thing you don't want to be is a kook. That's to say, an absolute beginner who is ‘all the gear, no idea'. First off, a chat about surf etiquette and beach safety (flags and stuff alert you to conditions) and tides. With your board under your arm, you'll make your way to one of the local beaches. It'll be a spot that's perfect for beginners to gain confidence, where the waves aren't too gnarly.

During the course of your session you'll also start to understand the different waves (in essence spilling, plunging or surging!) and how to catch them. Being able to stand up and do just that is the name of the game. You start riding on your belly to get used to riding the waves. Then you'll be shown the five-stage method of getting to standing up.

Crack that and you'll be hooked on surfing. It's a friendly, welcoming and accessible watersport. Surfing has been rooted in Cornwall since the 60s and Newquay is by far the most well-known surf spot in the UK.
